Many now build digital balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, data loggers and other instruments with circuit boards inside. That shift brings a new problem: static discharge. A board damaged by static during assembly might pass testing and then fail at a customer's lab months later. An ESD floor is one of the most effective ways to stop that.
Static damage is hard to spot. A discharge too small to feel can weaken a component without killing it, so the instrument works on the test bench but drifts or fails in use. For a company selling to labs, hospitals and schools, those failures mean warranty costs and lost reputation.
In a typical Ambala instrument unit, people walk between stores, assembly benches, testing and packing, carrying boards and modules. Wrist straps only protect people while they are seated at a bench. An ESD floor with ESD footwear protects them everywhere else in the room.
Packing areas can be included if products are handled outside their protective packaging there.
Many Ambala units are small, and an ESD floor across the whole building isn't always necessary or affordable. We usually suggest defining a clear ESD protected area. That is the rooms or bays where sensitive parts are exposed. We floor those properly and mark the boundary. Other areas can stay as ordinary floor. It is better to do the critical rooms well than to cover everything badly.
Surface preparation. Older floors of mosaic, tiles or patched cement are ground, and loose sections are removed and repaired.
Copper grid and earthing points. Copper tape is laid in a grid and brought to earthing points at the walls.
Conductive primer. It is spread over the whole area to connect the surface to the grid.
ESD finish. Epoxy or PU, usually self levelling, in a colour that marks the protected area.
Earthing and testing. Your electrician connects the earthing points, and we test resistance across the room and give you the readings.
A small room with a sound existing floor can sometimes be completed in a few days, but ESD floors need full curing before testing. We confirm the schedule after seeing the room.
Bench mats protect work on the bench. They don't protect parts while people carry them around the room. A floor and footwear cover that gap.
Many units use a distinct colour, often grey or blue, for the ESD protected area so staff and visitors know when they're entering it.
