It is slightly resilient underfoot, quieter than tiles or epoxy, resists yellowing, and can be run up the walls as a coved skirting. That combination makes it one of the most popular floors for hospitals, pharma cleanrooms, laboratories and modern commercial interiors.
No joints. Tile grout and panel seams collect dirt and bacteria. A poured floor has nowhere for them to hide.
Coved skirting. The floor curves up the wall, so corners can be cleaned in one pass.
Easy disinfection. The sealed surface handles repeated cleaning with hospital and pharma disinfectants.
Comfort and noise. Its slight give is easier on staff who stand all day, and it cuts trolley and footstep noise.
Colour stability. PU topcoats resist yellowing, so light colours stay light.
| Situation | Why | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms with floor drains and washdowns | It settles flat, so water won't run to drains | PU concrete laid to falls |
| Steam, boiling water, heavy thermal shock | Too thin for thermal shock | PU concrete |
| Forklifts and heavy steel wheels | Can dent under concentrated loads | Epoxy screed or EPU |
| Very uneven or sloping base | Self levelling doesn't fix big level differences | Screed first |
| Strong acids and solvents | Chemical attack | Chemical resistant flooring |
Both are poured, smooth and jointless. PU is softer, quieter, more flexible and more colour stable. Epoxy is harder and usually a little cheaper. For hospitals, labs and cleanrooms, PU is generally preferred. For warehouses and packing halls with more wheel traffic, epoxy self levelling or EPU often suits better.
Where static discharge matters, such as electronics assembly, some OTs and powder handling areas, a static dissipative version is laid over a copper grid and conductive primer, then tested for resistance. See our antistatic ESD flooring page.
Foot traffic usually returns in about a day. Beds, trolleys and full cleaning follow after the specified cure time.
Hospitals, labs and offices rarely close. We phase work room by room, use low-odour products and coordinate with infection control, QA or facility teams.

Usually 2 to 4 mm, depending on traffic and use.
If the tiles are firmly bonded and flat, yes, after grinding and filling joints. Loose tiles must be removed.
Yes, and an antistatic grade is available where required by the hospital specification.
Not on its own, since it settles flat. Wet rooms need a sloped system such as PU concrete.
