There are university and institute research labs, leather and textile testing facilities that serve exporters, and QC rooms inside engineering plants in Panki and Dada Nagar. Add the city's hospitals and diagnostic chains, and there is a lot of floor space that needs to be smooth, jointless and easy to clean. PU self levelling flooring is made for those rooms.
In a lab, the floor collects whatever falls: reagents, sample residue, powders and broken glass. On a tiled floor, spills run into the grout and stay there. On bare concrete, they soak straight in. A self levelling PU floor is a continuous sealed surface, so spills sit on top and wipe away.
The other benefit is flatness. Lab benches, fume cupboards and instrument tables sit level without shims, and trolleys roll smoothly without catching on tile edges.
Both are poured systems, and both produce a smooth jointless floor. The differences that matter in Kanpur are these:
| Point | PU self levelling | Epoxy self levelling |
|---|---|---|
| Feel underfoot | Slightly softer and quieter | Harder |
| Temperature swings | Copes better | Can crack in extreme swings |
| Colour near windows | Stays stable | Can yellow over time |
| Cost | Somewhat higher | Lower |
| Resistance to strong solvents | Good | Often better |
For a leather testing lab using aggressive solvents, epoxy or a specialist chemical resistant floor may be the better call. For a hospital, a QC room or a general lab, PU is usually the more comfortable and longer-lasting option. We decide after seeing the room and the chemical list.
Kanpur's older institutional buildings often have terrazzo or mosaic floors, and many factory QC rooms were carved out of old workshop floors with oil in the concrete. Both can be overlaid, but they need proper work first. Terrazzo and mosaic are ground and their loose sections replaced. Oil-soaked concrete is cut out, because PU will not stick to it.
Summer heat is the other factor. Kanpur slabs can get very hot in May and June, and poured PU sets too fast on a hot floor. We schedule pours for cooler hours and keep the room shaded.
After preparation, we prime the floor and pour the self levelling PU to the agreed thickness, usually 2 to 3 mm for labs and hospitals. It is rolled to release air and finished with a satin or matt topcoat. Coves at the walls make cleaning easier.
Yes. Benches can be installed after the floor has cured. If they need to be anchored, tell us, and we will plan the anchor points so the floor isn't damaged later.
Wipe it up quickly. Occasional spills of most lab chemicals won't harm the floor. Frequent contact with strong solvents or acids needs a chemical resistant system instead.
A typical lab of a few hundred square feet takes three to four days from preparation to foot traffic.
