In food plants, pharma facilities, hospitals and commercial kitchens, walls are part of hygiene. Inspectors and auditors look closely at wall surfaces and especially at the junction where the wall meets the floor. Flaking paint, grease-stained plaster, tile grout and dirty corners are common findings. A hygienic wall coating combined with a coved floor-to-wall junction gives a smooth, washable surface that can be cleaned properly and stays intact under regular washing.

What a hygienic wall system includes

Wall coating. A hard, non-absorbent epoxy or PU coating over sound, dry plaster. It resists grease, food residues and repeated cleaning with detergents and disinfectants.

Coving. A smooth curve, typically 50 to 100 mm in radius, formed between floor and wall and joined to the floor system. It removes the right-angled corner where water, dirt and pests collect.

Sealed penetrations. Pipes, conduits, switch boxes, door frames and grilles are sealed so there are no gaps.

Impact protection. Bump rails and corner guards protect coated walls from trolleys, bins and pallet trucks.

Preparation decides success

Most wall coating failures come from what's underneath:

  1. Old distemper, putty and emulsion must be removed back to sound plaster, since coatings peel off with soft layers
  2. Damp walls, especially rising damp near the floor, must be treated first
  3. Cracked and hollow plaster must be cut out and repaired
  4. Grease on kitchen walls must be thoroughly cleaned off
  5. New plaster must be dry enough, which is checked with a moisture meter

Coves that last

Coves crack when they sit on damp or weak plaster, or aren't keyed into the floor. We form coves in PU concrete or epoxy mortar, keyed into both floor and wall, and join them to the floor system so floor, cove and wall form one continuous surface.

Is wall coating better than tiles in a kitchen?

For hygiene, usually yes, because there are no grout lines. Add bump protection where trolleys hit walls.

How high should walls be coated?

At least to the height of splashes and washdown. Many food and pharma rooms coat full height.

Can coving be added to an existing floor?

Yes, if the floor edge is sound. The cove is keyed into the floor and sealed to it.

Can you coat ceilings too?

Yes, with washable coatings suited to kitchens and clean areas.
