Meat and food processing plants in Ghaziabad district work to demanding hygiene standards, especially those supplying export markets. Floors get most of the attention, but walls and the floor-wall junction are just as important in an audit. Blood, fat and water splash up walls, hot water washdowns hit them every shift, and trolleys and bins knock into them all day. Ordinary paint and plaster can't cope. A hygienic wall coating with coved junctions can.

What processing plant walls face

  • Splash and washdown. Walls up to a metre or more above the floor are soaked several times a day, often with hot water and chlorinated or alkaline cleaners.
  • Organic contamination. Blood and fat stain porous surfaces and support bacterial growth.
  • Impact. Bins, carts, pallet trucks and hanging product rails hit walls regularly.
  • Temperature changes. Chillers and freezers sit next to warm processing areas, which creates condensation on walls.

The system we recommend

Coved junction. A cove formed in PU concrete or epoxy mortar joins the floor to the wall so water and dirt can't sit in the corner. In wet processing areas, PU concrete coves continue the floor system up the wall, which avoids a weak joint at the junction.

Wall coating. A hard, washable epoxy or PU wall coating applied over sound, dry plaster, in a light colour so contamination is easy to see.

Impact protection. Bump rails at trolley height and stainless or PVC corner guards at doorways and column corners. Without these, even a good coating gets chipped quickly in a busy plant.

Condensation and cold rooms

Walls next to chillers and freezers often run wet with condensation. Coating a wet wall leads to blistering. We check wall moisture and temperature, schedule work when rooms can be warmed and dried, and in some cold rooms recommend insulated panel systems instead of coatings, because condensation will keep returning on a cold masonry wall.

Coating or PVC cladding?

Some plants use PVC or composite hygienic cladding sheets instead of coatings. Both can work:

PointResin wall coatingHygienic cladding sheets
JointsSeamlessWelded or capped joints

Uneven wallsNeeds plaster repair firstCan hide unevenness

We install coatings and coves. If cladding makes more sense for a particular room, we'll say so.

Preparation

Walls are stripped of old paint, putty and distemper. Damaged plaster is repaired and cracks filled. Moisture is checked. Only then are primer and coating applied, with coves formed before the wall coating so the two join cleanly.

FAQs

How high should walls be coated in a meat processing hall?

At least to the height reached by splash and washdown. Many plants coat full height for easier cleaning and audits.

Can coving be added without replacing the floor?

Yes, if the existing floor is sound. The cove is keyed into the floor edge and wall, and sealed at both junctions.

Will the coating handle steam cleaning?

Resin coatings handle hot water washdowns well. Direct, prolonged steam at close range should be avoided or specified carefully.
