The case against tiles in clinical areas

Hospitals in Bareilly still mostly use vitrified tiles, and they are fine for lobbies and offices. In clinical areas they cause two problems.

The first is grout. Every tile joint is a small channel that holds moisture and dirt. Mopping pushes dirty water into it rather than lifting it out, and within a year or two the grout lines are visibly darker than the tiles.

The second is damage. Beds, oxygen cylinders and equipment trolleys chip tile edges, and a chipped tile is hard to replace without the new one standing out.

A poured PU floor avoids both. It is one continuous surface, it runs up the wall as a cove, and if it is gouged, the damaged area can be cut out and patched.

Monsoon moisture

Bareilly's ground-floor slabs, especially in older buildings or low-lying plots, can hold moisture through the rainy season. Poured PU floors are sensitive to this. If moisture pushes up through the slab, it forms bubbles under the floor that can appear weeks after installation.

So we test moisture on every job. If readings are high, we use a moisture-tolerant primer or an epoxy cementitious base layer before the PU goes down. Sometimes the right advice is to fix drainage around the building first, and we will say so.

Installation, step by step

1. Survey and moisture testing.
2. Removal of loose tiles, or grinding of sound tiles and concrete.
3. Crack repair and screeding of low areas.
4. Forming coves at the walls.
5. Priming, then pouring the self levelling PU and rolling out trapped air.
6. Satin or matt topcoat for lower glare under clinical lighting.

A hospital can stay open while we work ward by ward. Each area is usually back in use within three to four days.

Looking after the floor

Use the disinfectants your infection control team already uses, as long as they are not strongly acidic. Place protective pads under heavy fixed equipment. Get deep gouges patched early, before water can get under the edge.

Does PU self levelling flooring give off fumes?

Some products have a noticeable smell during application. For hospitals we use low-odour systems and ventilate the area, and patients are kept away until the floor has cured.

Light blue, green and grey are common. Many hospitals also use different colours to mark departments or guide patients along a route.
