Ambala's scientific instrument trade has a particular problem with floors. When you are assembling microscopes, balances or lab glassware, a speck of concrete dust is a defect. Calibration rooms need a stable, clean environment. A dusty cement floor, or a tiled floor with crumbling grout, works against all of that. PU self levelling flooring gives these rooms a smooth, jointless surface that stays clean and doesn't generate dust.

Instrument assembly and calibration rooms

For precision work, three properties of a self levelling PU floor matter most.

It doesn't shed particles, so the floor is no longer a source of dust. It is jointless, so there are no grout lines to trap grit that gets kicked up later. And it is slightly resilient, so a dropped lens or glass component is a bit less likely to shatter than on a hard tile or stone floor. That won't save everything, but it helps.

We usually suggest a light grey or pale colour for these rooms. Small screws, springs and glass fragments are much easier to find on a light floor than on a dark or speckled one.

Existing buildings and old floors

Many units in Ambala run in buildings that have been extended over the years. We often find a mix of mosaic, kota stone, tiles and patched cement in the same building. Self levelling PU can go over most sound surfaces, but each one needs different preparation:

  • Tiles and stone are ground to give the primer something to bond to.
  • Loose or hollow tiles are taken out and the gaps filled.
  • Old paint or coatings are removed down to a sound layer.
  • Level differences between old and new sections are screeded out.

This preparation is where most of the labour goes, and it is also what decides whether the floor lasts.

How we install it

  1. Site survey with moisture and flatness checks.
  2. Surface preparation and repairs, as described above.
  3. Coving at wall junctions where you want an easy-clean edge.
  4. Priming, then pouring and spreading the self levelling PU to thickness.
  5. De-aerating with a spiked roller for a smooth, pinhole-free finish.
  6. An optional satin topcoat to reduce glare under bright task lighting.

For a small lab or assembly room, the whole job often takes three to four days.

FAQs

Can you finish a small calibration lab over a long weekend?

Often yes, if the existing floor doesn't need major repairs. We confirm the schedule after the site survey.

How does it compare with epoxy self levelling for a lab?

Epoxy is harder and slightly cheaper. PU is more resilient and better at resisting yellowing. For most instrument labs, either works, and we will explain the trade-offs for your room.

Will the floor stand up to chair castors?

Yes. For rooms with constant chair movement, we recommend a slightly thicker layer and a hard-wearing topcoat.
