Static electricity is easy to ignore until it costs money. A technician walks across a dry floor in January, touches a circuit board, and a component fails weeks later in the field. A server room loses a line card after someone pulls a trolley across it. In Delhi, where winter air gets very dry, these problems get worse between November and February. An ESD floor gives static a controlled path to earth before it can reach your equipment.

Conductive or dissipative?

These two words get mixed up a lot, and choosing the wrong one can mean a floor that fails your audit.

Most electronics work falls under static dissipative, in line with ESD programmes based on ANSI/ESD S20.20 or IEC 61340-5-1. Your ESD coordinator or equipment supplier should tell you the range to design for, and we build the floor to match it.

How an ESD floor is built

An ESD floor is a small electrical system, not just a coating.

  1. The slab is ground, repaired and primed.
  2. Copper tape is laid in a grid and connected to earthing points at the walls.
  3. A conductive primer is applied over the whole area so every part of the floor connects to the copper.
  4. The ESD epoxy or PU finish is laid on top, usually as a self levelling layer.
  5. Your electrician connects the earthing points to the building's earth.
  6. We test the finished floor with a resistance meter at several points and give you the readings.

If any step is skipped, particularly the earthing and testing, you have an expensive floor that only looks like an ESD floor.

A floor alone isn't enough

Staff also need ESD footwear or heel grounders for the floor to protect anything. Ordinary rubber-soled shoes insulate a person from the floor. We say this at every site visit because it is the most common reason an ESD programme doesn't work.

Working in Delhi's occupied buildings

Server rooms and hospitals can't simply be switched off. We plan the work in sections, protect running equipment from dust, and work at night where needed. For data centres, sub-floor work under raised floors is scheduled around your change windows.

FAQs

How often should an ESD floor be tested?

Test it at handover, then periodically as part of your ESD programme. Many facilities test every six to twelve months, and after any major floor repair.

Can we clean it with normal floor polish?

No. Wax and many polishes leave an insulating film that ruins the floor's performance. Use cleaners recommended for ESD floors.

Can an existing epoxy floor be converted to ESD?

Sometimes. If the existing floor is sound, we can grind it, lay the copper grid and conductive primer, and apply an ESD finish on top.
