Static causes two quite different problems in Ludhiana's factories. In electronics and electrical units, which make controllers, auto electronics, switchgear and power supplies, it damages components. In textile units working with synthetic yarns, static makes fibres cling, causes shocks and interferes with machines. A properly built antistatic or ESD floor helps with both, although the requirements are different.

Electronics and electrical manufacturers

Ludhiana has a growing number of units making electronic parts for vehicles, bicycles, e-rickshaws, inverters and industrial machinery. Many supply larger manufacturers who increasingly ask about ESD controls during supplier audits.

For these units we build static dissipative floors, usually in the range of 10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms, following the customer's ESD requirement. The floor covers the ESD protected area, which typically includes board assembly, soldering, testing and component stores. Combined with ESD footwear, it keeps people from carrying charge to the products.

Textile and yarn processing

Synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon build up static during winding, twisting and knitting, especially in dry winter conditions. Workers get shocks, fibres stick to machines and people, and lint builds up on charged surfaces. An antistatic floor helps drain charge from people and trolleys moving around the machines.

Textile areas have different priorities from electronics rooms. The floor has to take trolleys, lint and oil from machines, and doesn't usually need tight resistance control. We use a tougher antistatic epoxy system here rather than a lab-grade dissipative floor.

Winter is when static peaks

Ludhiana's winter air gets very dry. Static problems that are barely noticed in the monsoon become serious between November and February. Permanent floor-based control keeps working regardless of humidity, unlike antistatic sprays or humidifiers alone.

Practical advice

  • Define the protected area clearly. Mark its boundary on the floor.
  • Make ESD footwear part of the entry routine, and test it at the entrance if possible.
  • Don't let housekeeping wax or polish the floor.
  • Put steel plates or wide castors under very heavy trolleys and racks. Deep gouges can break the conductive path.
  • Retest periodically and after repairs.

Do textile units really need an antistatic floor?

Not every textile unit does. It helps where synthetic yarn is processed in dry conditions and static is causing shocks, fibre cling or quality problems. We look at your process before recommending it.

Can the floor be laid around existing knitting or winding machines?

Yes, though it is easier with machines moved. Where they must stay, we work carefully around the bases and still connect all areas to the grid.

Will an ESD floor help us pass a customer audit?

It covers the flooring part of an ESD audit if it is built to the right range and tested. The auditor will also check footwear, wrist straps, workstations and records.
