Noida and Greater Noida now assemble a large share of India's mobile phones, along with LED products, set-top boxes, wearables and contract electronics. In these plants, ESD control isn't optional. Customers audit it, and poor control shows up as yield loss and field returns. The floor is one of the main parts of an ESD programme, and it is the part that is hardest to fix later if it is done wrong.

What EMS and mobile plants need from the floor

Most EMS and mobile assembly plants in Noida work to ANSI/ESD S20.20 or IEC 61340-5-1. For flooring, that usually means:

  • a static dissipative floor within the specified resistance range
  • a system test showing that person, footwear and floor together drain charge within limits
  • a walking body voltage test that stays below the programme's threshold
  • documented periodic testing

The floor has to meet those numbers across the whole ESD protected area, including aisles, not just at the benches.

Designing for SMT and assembly lines

Heavy equipment. SMT lines, reflow ovens and AOI machines are heavy. The floor must take their weight without cracking the conductive layer, especially at machine feet.

Line changes. Lines get moved. A self levelling ESD floor over a continuous copper grid lets you reposition lines without dead zones.

Trolleys and material flow. Kitting trolleys and reel carts move constantly. Wheels should be conductive or dissipative, and the floor's wear surface should be tough enough for the traffic.

Cleanliness. Many lines work in controlled environments. The floor needs to be low-particle and easy to clean without wax.

A realistic installation sequence

In a new plant:

  1. Slab moisture and flatness tests, long before the line arrives
  2. Grinding and repairs
  3. Copper tape grid, laid to a pattern that suits the future layout, with earthing points at columns and walls
  4. Conductive primer
  5. ESD self levelling finish
  6. Earthing connections by the electrical contractor
  7. Resistance testing and handover documentation
  8. Line installation after full cure

In a running plant, we work bay by bay with sealed-off zones, and lines move into finished areas as each one is handed over.

Where ESD floors fail in practice

  • Waxing or polish by a new housekeeping contractor
  • Non-ESD chair castors and trolley wheels that isolate loads from the floor
  • Rubber anti-fatigue mats at stations, which break the path to earth
  • Unbonded repairs after equipment damage
  • Footwear compliance slipping during busy production periods

None of these is a floor defect, but all of them make the floor look like it failed an audit. We point them out at handover.

What resistance range will you build to?

The range from your ESD programme or customer requirement, typically 10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms for static dissipative flooring. We test and record the results.

Can the floor be installed while the plant is running?

Yes, in phases. Each bay is sealed, installed, cured and tested before equipment moves in.

How long before we can install SMT lines on the new floor?

After full cure, usually about a week, depending on the system and temperature. Light foot traffic comes earlier.
