EPU flooring in Kanpur

Many warehouses and factory sheds in Kanpur have metal roofs, and in May and June the space underneath gets extremely hot. The concrete floor heats up through the day, then cools a little at night, and the cycle repeats for months. Standard epoxy floors in these buildings often develop fine cracks, lift at joints and look tired within a couple of seasons. Heat under metal roofs

Under a metal roof in a Kanpur summer, the air near the floor can stay hot well into the evening. The slab expands during the day and contracts as it cools. A rigid coating bonded to it is pulled back and forth each time, and eventually cracks, usually along existing slab joints and shrinkage cracks first.

The polyurethane in EPU gives the coating some elasticity. It moves with the slab instead of cracking, while keeping most of epoxy's hardness and resistance to wear. For warehouses that also get sun through open shutters, EPU's better colour stability means the floor near the doors doesn't turn yellow either.

• keep materials in the coolest part of the building
• mix smaller batches
• close roof vents or shade skylights during application where possible

October to March is easier, but with care, work can go ahead year-round.

Preparation

The slab is ground or shot blasted, cracks and joints are repaired, and damaged joint edges along aisles are rebuilt with epoxy mortar before coating. Joints in warehouse slabs are filled with a semi-rigid filler so wheels don't break the new coating edges.

FAQs

Our epoxy warehouse floor cracked after two summers. Will EPU last longer?

In hot buildings with daily heat cycling, EPU usually lasts longer because it is more flexible. Cracks coming from the slab itself still need repair first.

Can EPU be laid while the warehouse runs?

Yes, zone by zone, moving stock as each section is finished.

Does EPU get soft in extreme heat?

Properly cured EPU stays firm under normal indoor summer temperatures. Very hot spots, such as under an oven or furnace, need a heat-resistant system.
