Many distribution centres near Kundli and Rai handle chilled goods: dairy, fresh produce, pharmaceuticals and packaged foods kept at a few degrees above freezing. Their floors don't face the extreme thermal shock of a blast freezer, but they do face constant, smaller temperature changes as dock doors open and close, trucks back in and stock moves between chilled and ambient zones. Standard epoxy often cracks and lifts along those zone boundaries. EPU flooring, an epoxy-polyurethane hybrid, handles them better.

Chilled rooms and dock zones

In a 2 to 8°C distribution centre, the floor typically experiences:

• cool, damp conditions inside the chilled area
• warm air rushing in every time a dock door opens
• condensation near doors, which makes floors wet and slippery
• pallet trucks and reach trucks crossing the boundary all day

The hybrid's flexibility helps it cope with the repeated expansion and contraction at these boundaries. An anti-slip texture near doors deals with condensation.

For true frozen areas and blast freezers far below zero, a thicker PU concrete system on a properly insulated slab is the better choice.

Ambient warehouses with sun at the docks

Dock areas on the highway-facing sides of warehouses get strong sun through open doors. Standard epoxy yellows there. EPU is far more colour stable, so aisle markings and floor colour stay consistent from the dock to the back wall.

What to specify

New slabs

Many warehouses in the area are recently built, and new slabs hold moisture. Any resin floor laid too early can blister. We test moisture before fixing the installation date. If the programme is tight, a moisture-tolerant primer or an epoxy cementitious base can help.

Installation in a running warehouse

Chilled warehouses can't simply be switched off. We plan work in zones:

1. empty and warm up one zone
2. prepare the slab, repair joints and cracks
3. prime and apply the EPU system
4. allow full cure before cooling the zone again
5. move stock back and start the next zone

Curing resin at low temperatures leads to a soft, under-cured floor, so we don't rush the cooling step.

Can EPU be laid in a chilled room that is still running?

No. The area must be warmed to suitable temperatures during installation and curing.

Is EPU suitable for pharma cold storage?

Yes, for chilled storage aisles and dock zones. It is jointless and easy to clean.
