Ambala has a lot of large institutional kitchens. The cantonment, colleges, hospitals, hostels and wedding venues all cook in volume every day. Along the NH-44 corridor there are also bakeries, dhabas that serve highway traffic around the clock, and small food units. The floors in these kitchens take heavy utensils, hot water and constant washing. PU concrete is the floor that keeps working in these places when tiles and paint give up.

Why kitchen tiles fail in Ambala's big kitchens

We see the same pattern on almost every kitchen survey:

  1. Grout between tiles washes out after repeated hot water cleaning.
  2. Water gets under the tiles and they start to sound hollow.
  3. Heavy vessels crack the loose tiles.
  4. Dirty water collects in the cracks and under broken tiles, causing smell and hygiene problems.

Patching tiles only buys a few months. PU concrete solves the root problem. It is a jointless floor, 6 to 9 mm thick, that bonds to the concrete slab so there is nothing for water to get under.

Designing a kitchen floor, not just laying one

A kitchen floor works well only if water leaves it quickly. On a survey we look at:

  • where the drains are and whether they are at the lowest points
  • whether the floor slopes towards them
  • where people walk with trolleys and where heavy vessels are set down
  • the junctions with walls, platforms and equipment bases

Then we plan falls, drain positions, coves and thickness. For areas with steam or boiling water, we recommend 9 mm. Elsewhere, 6 mm is usually enough.

Working without shutting the kitchen

Big kitchens in Ambala usually can't stop cooking. We divide the kitchen into zones and move cooking to one side while we work on the other. Because PU concrete cures fast, each zone can usually be walked on within about a day and back in service shortly after. Tile breakout is the noisy part, so we schedule it at quieter hours.

The installation

After breaking out the old tiles and weak screed, the base is prepared, falls are corrected and drains are set. Anchor grooves are cut at drains, doors and edges. Coves are formed at walls and around platforms. Then the PU concrete is laid with a textured anti-slip finish.

What PU concrete won't do

It is a textured, matt working floor. It won't look like polished stone. Colours can fade where sunlight falls on them. It also cannot fix structural problems in the slab. If the slab is badly cracked or sinking, that needs repair first.

How slippery is it with oil on the floor?

Its textured surface gives much better grip than tiles, even with some oil. The texture level is chosen for each area.

How long will it last in a mess kitchen?

With correct falls, anchor grooves and thickness, it lasts many years in heavy kitchens. Areas under the heaviest vessels may need local touch-ups over time.
