There are dairy plants, pickle and papad units, and hotel kitchens that serve a steady flow of visitors. The floors in these kitchens and processing rooms are hit with boiling water, ghee, milk and heavy utensils around the clock. PU concrete is the flooring system that lasts in these conditions.
Kitchens that cook in huge vessels have floor problems that ordinary kitchens don't. Very large pots and degs are dragged and set down hard. Boiling dal and water spill regularly. Floors are washed down with plenty of water several times a day, and many volunteers walk through in wet footwear.
Tiles in these kitchens crack under the impact, and grout washes out within months. PU concrete at 9 mm handles the impact and heat, doesn't mind being flooded with hot water, and has a textured surface that stays grippy when wet. We lay it to fall towards drains so water clears quickly.
Milk processing floors face lactic acid from spilled milk and curd, hot water, steam and caustic CIP chemicals. Lactic acid is particularly hard on cement-based floors and many epoxies. PU concrete resists it well. We usually lay 9 mm in processing and CIP zones and 6 mm in chilling and packing areas.
Pickle units deal with vinegar, mustard oil, salt and spices, all of which attack concrete in different ways. Papad and snack makers get oil and flour paste on the floor. PU concrete handles acidic and oily spills, and its surface can be scrubbed hard without wearing away.
Amritsar gets cold in winter, and resin floors cure slowly when the slab is cold. PU concrete is more forgiving than most systems, but in December and January we still check slab temperature, keep doors closed and use heaters if needed. The floor still goes down properly. It just takes a little longer to reach full strength.
Kitchens can usually return to light use within about a day, and heavier use soon after.
It handles hot spills and heat from nearby equipment well. Directly under an open fire or a very hot burner base, a heat-resistant plinth such as refractory or stone is still needed, and we cove the PU concrete around it.
Once cured, PU concrete is inert and widely used in food and dairy plants. It is jointless, so food residue has nowhere to collect.
We divide the kitchen into sections and work on one at a time, often overnight, so cooking can continue in the rest.
