Meat processing and export plants around the district wash down with hot water several times a day. Beverage and bottling lines spill sugar and cleaning chemicals, and cold chain units swing between freezing chambers and hot loading docks. Processing floors in these plants face a hard combination:
Tiles crack and lose their grout. Epoxy softens with heat and eventually cracks from thermal shock. PU concrete resists all of these because it has some flexibility, bonds very strongly to the slab and handles temperatures well above what epoxy can take.
For areas with steam or very hot water, we lay it at 9 mm. For chilling rooms, packing areas and corridors, 6 mm is usually enough.
Bottling lines leak syrup, juice and beer, all of which contain sugars and acids that attack concrete. The floor also gets wet and caustic during CIP cleaning. PU concrete laid to falls, with proper stainless steel drains, keeps the line area dry and clean. We add coves around conveyor plinths so spills can't collect underneath.
In cold chain facilities, the floor at a freezer door moves from sub-zero temperatures to summer heat in seconds. That shock splits rigid floors. PU concrete handles it. The one condition is that it must be laid on a properly insulated and heated slab where the chamber runs well below zero. Otherwise the ground underneath can freeze and heave. We check the design before recommending anything.
PU concrete cures fast. Many areas can take foot traffic within about a day and go back into production soon after, which suits plants that must restart quickly.
Colours in most PU concrete systems fade or yellow under sunlight. The floor still performs, but a loading dock won't look new for long. It is also a textured, matt floor, not a glossy showroom finish. And its life depends heavily on preparation: a floor laid over weak concrete or without anchor grooves will fail at the edges no matter what material is used.
With good preparation and 9 mm thickness in hot areas, PU concrete commonly lasts many years in these plants. Drain areas and forklift routes wear first and can be repaired locally.
