Kanpur's industry is hard on concrete. Tanneries in Jajmau use lime, sulphides, salts, acids and chrome solutions. Food, confectionery and soap units deal with hot oils, sugars and alkalis. Most of these plants also wash their floors with plenty of water. Plain concrete in these conditions erodes, potholes and starts smelling. PU concrete is one of the few floor systems that holds up to that mix of chemicals, heat and water.

Tannery floors

Tannery floors are some of the most chemically aggressive we deal with. Different areas face different problems:

AreaWhat hits the floorOur usual approach
Beamhouse (soaking, liming)Lime, sulphides, salt, lots of waterPU concrete, 9 mm, laid to drains
Tanning and retanningChrome salts, acids, heatPU concrete or specialist chemical resistant system, depending on the chemicals
Drum areasHeavy impact, liquor spillsPU concrete, 9 mm, with reinforced edges
Finishing and dispatchSolvents, dry trafficPU coating or epoxy

The tanning section needs the most care. Some chrome tanning and pickling steps use acids that are too strong for PU concrete over the long term. We ask for your chemical list and concentrations at the survey, and where needed we recommend a chemical resistant flooring system for those zones.

Food, confectionery and soap units

Kanpur's food and confectionery plants use PU concrete in cooking, frying and syrup areas, where hot spills and sugar residue would damage other floors. Soap and detergent units use it where alkaline spills and water washdown are constant. In both, the jointless, coved finish makes cleaning quicker and more thorough.

The heat factor

Kanpur summers are very hot, and many process areas add their own heat. PU concrete handles hot spills well. Installation still needs care, though. On a hot slab the material stiffens quickly, so we lay in cooler hours, use shade and control batch sizes.

Why edges and drains matter most

A PU concrete floor almost never fails in the middle. It fails at drains, door thresholds, channel edges and around machine bases, where water and chemicals get under the edge. Every job we do includes anchor grooves cut into the slab at those points, so the floor locks into the concrete rather than just sitting on it. Drain channels are rebuilt where their edges have crumbled.

Installation steps

  1. Survey and chemical list review
  2. Breakout of eroded and chemical-soaked concrete
  3. Rebuilding with repair mortar, and correction of falls
  4. Anchor grooves and drain detailing
  5. Coves at walls, pits and plinths
  6. PU concrete at 6 or 9 mm with anti-slip texture

FAQs

Can PU concrete be used in a tannery beamhouse?

Yes. Lime and sulphide liquors with plenty of water are conditions PU concrete handles well, as long as drains and falls are done properly.

Will it survive chrome tanning chemicals?

It depends on the exact chemicals and concentrations. We review your process list before recommending a system for tanning areas.

Can the work be done section by section?

Yes. We usually work area by area around the process flow so the tannery or plant keeps operating.
