In a Kanpur tannery, the beamhouse gets most of the attention because it is wet and smelly. The areas that actually destroy floors fastest, though, are the pickling and tanning sections. Hides are pickled in salt and sulphuric or formic acid, then tanned with chrome salts. Acidic liquor pours from drums, runs across the floor and sits in channels. Bare concrete dissolves. PU concrete, which works well in the beamhouse, may not be enough here. These zones usually need a dedicated chemical resistant system.

Tanning and pickling areas

What we typically find on survey in Jajmau:

  • concrete eroded down to the aggregate around drums
  • channels with crumbling edges and exposed reinforcement
  • acid seeping under old tiles or coatings
  • floors that stay wet and acidic all day

For these zones, we generally recommend novolac epoxy or vinyl ester linings. Where there is heavy mechanical damage from hides, pallets and drum maintenance, acid resistant tiles bedded and grouted in chemical resistant mortar are another option. The system depends on the acids used, their concentrations and whether liquor is hot.

Our PU concrete page for Kanpur explains which tannery areas suit PU concrete instead.

Soap, detergent and chemical units

Kanpur's soap and detergent makers handle caustic soda, sulphonic acids and hot fats. Alkaline and acidic spills in the same unit call for a system that resists both, usually a novolac epoxy screed in process areas, with falls to drains.

Battery rooms

Warehouses and factories with electric forklifts have battery charging rooms where sulphuric acid spills and fumes damage concrete. A coved novolac epoxy lining with a small bund is a straightforward fix.

Channels, drains and sumps

In tanneries especially, the drainage system is where acid does most of its damage. Lining the floor but not the channels simply moves the failure point. We rebuild channel edges and line channels, sumps and pits as part of the same system, with anchor details at every edge so liquor can't get behind the lining.

Preparation

Acid-soaked concrete keeps releasing acid even after the surface looks dry. Before relining, we:

  1. break out damaged concrete to sound material
  2. neutralise the exposed substrate
  3. let it dry, and test it
  4. treat any corroded reinforcement
  5. rebuild with a suitable repair mortar

It is slow work, but it is what makes the new lining last.

Kanpur's heat

Summer slabs in Kanpur get hot enough to affect how resin linings cure. We work in cooler hours, protect materials from the sun and adjust batch sizes.

FAQs

Should we use PU concrete or a chemical resistant lining in the tanning yard?

For pickling and chrome tanning areas with strong acids, a chemical resistant lining is usually safer. PU concrete suits beamhouse and wet areas with milder chemistry. We decide after reviewing your process chemicals.

How long does a tannery section take?

Breakout, neutralising, rebuilding and lining can take one to two weeks per section, depending on damage.

Can acid resistant tiles be used instead of resin?

Yes, for heavy duty areas. They must be bedded and grouted in chemical resistant mortar. Ordinary cement grout will fail.
