New plants in Baddi, Barotiwala and Nalagarh are usually built against a deadline. Production has to start on a date agreed with customers or regulators, and the floor is one of the last jobs. The problem is that a new concrete slab needs weeks to cure and dry before an epoxy or PU self levelling floor can safely go on it. In the monsoon it can take much longer. Epoxy cementitious flooring is how many plants close that gap.

What it is

Epoxy cementitious is a three-component system: epoxy resin, a hardener and a cement-based powder. Once mixed and applied, it cures into a dense, hard layer that bonds strongly to concrete. Its cement content means it tolerates moisture in the slab far better than pure resin floors.

Using it as a moisture barrier on young slabs

A normal resin floor on a slab that is still damp will blister, sometimes weeks after installation. In a GMP room, that means a failed floor and a repair shutdown. Many epoxy cementitious systems can be applied to concrete much sooner, within the limits the manufacturer sets, and they act as a temporary moisture barrier. Once they have cured, the PU or epoxy finish floor goes on top.

In practice this can bring floor completion forward by weeks. We test the slab, check the manufacturer's limits and tell you honestly whether it will work for your timeline.

As a finished floor

In some areas of a plant, epoxy cementitious is good enough as the final floor:

  • utility and plant rooms
  • engineering stores
  • non-GMP corridors and service areas
  • some wash areas with moderate use

It is grey, matt and hard wearing, and it's easy to clean. It doesn't have the smooth, coved cleanroom finish needed in production rooms, which should get a PU self levelling floor on top.

Monsoon conditions

Baddi's heavy rain from July to September keeps slabs damp, especially on ground floors of plants built on filled land. Epoxy cementitious systems are one of the few options that can go down reliably in these conditions. We still check for standing water and active seepage, which have to be fixed first.

Installation outline

  1. Moisture and strength testing of the slab
  2. Shot blasting or grinding to remove laitance
  3. Crack and joint treatment
  4. Application of the epoxy cementitious layer, typically 2 to 4 mm as a barrier
  5. Curing, then the finish floor if specified

FAQs

How soon after pouring can epoxy cementitious be applied?

It depends on the product and conditions. Many systems allow application on concrete that is much younger than epoxy would tolerate. We check the manufacturer's data and test your slab.

Is it acceptable under a GMP floor?

Yes. It is used as a base layer. The GMP requirements are met by the finish floor laid on top.

Can it be coved at the walls?

The coving is usually formed in the finish system. The epoxy cementitious layer prepares the base beneath it.
