There's no single floor that resists every chemical. A lining that handles sulphuric acid may fail with chromic acid. A system that shrugs off caustic soda may soften under certain solvents. Hot chemicals are far more aggressive than cold ones, and standing liquid does much more damage than a splash wiped up quickly. That's why chemical resistant flooring always starts with your chemical list, not with a product brochure.

  3. Temperatures of liquids that reach the floor
  4. Exposure, whether occasional splash, spill cleaned promptly, or constant immersion
  5. Traffic, meaning foot, trolleys, forklifts or steel handling

Detailing and containment

Chemical resistant floors most often fail at edges, joints and drains, not in open areas. A good installation includes:

  • falls to lined channels or sumps, so chemicals don't stand
  • coves up walls and tank plinths
  • lined bund walls around tanks and drum stores
  • chemical resistant sealants at necessary movement joints
  • anchoring details at edges so liquids can't get under the lining

Preparing contaminated floors

Most floors we line have already been attacked. Chemically damaged concrete has to be broken out, neutralised and dried. Corroded reinforcement must be treated, and the base rebuilt before lining. Chemicals left in the concrete will attack the new floor from below.

Curing before use

Chemical resistant systems reach full resistance only after full cure, typically several days, longer in cold weather. Exposing them to chemicals too early shortens their life. We give the date in writing.

FAQs

Is epoxy flooring chemical resistant?

Standard epoxy resists many everyday spills. Strong acids, oxidisers, some solvents and hot chemicals need specialist systems such as novolac epoxy or vinyl ester.

What about hydrofluoric acid?

Hydrofluoric acid attacks many materials that resist other acids, including some fillers and tiles. It needs a specially selected system and careful containment.

Can a chemical resistant floor be installed in a running plant?

Yes, section by section, with each area taken out of use during preparation, lining and curing.

Do you line walls and tank bunds?

Yes. Containment works best when floors, walls to splash height and bunds are lined as one system.
