PU concrete (polyurethane cement) is a heavy-duty floor made from polyurethane resin, cement and graded aggregates, trowelled onto concrete at 4 to 9 mm. It is built for the harshest wet areas: floors hit with boiling water, steam cleaning, hot oil, food acids, caustic cleaners and heavy trolleys. Food, dairy, meat, beverage and pharma plants, and large commercial kitchens, use it where epoxy and tiles fail.

What makes PU concrete different

  • Thermal shock resistance. At 9 mm it handles steam cleaning and very hot spills without cracking.
  • Chemical resistance. It resists lactic acid, food acids, fats, sugars and many cleaning chemicals.
  • Strong bond. It locks into the slab, especially with anchor grooves at edges and drains.
  • Moisture tolerance. Many PU concrete systems tolerate damper and younger slabs than epoxy, within the manufacturer's limits.
  • Grip. It has a textured finish that stays slip resistant when wet and greasy.
  • Fast cure. Many areas can return to use quickly, which suits shutdowns.

Details that decide whether it lasts

A PU concrete floor almost never fails in the middle. It fails at edges and drains. A proper installation includes:

  1. Falls to drains, so water runs off without standing
  2. Stainless steel drains set at the right level before the floor goes down
  3. Anchor grooves cut into the slab at drains, doors, edges and plinths
  4. Coved skirting at walls and around equipment
  5. Correct thickness for each zone

If a quote doesn't mention anchor grooves and falls, ask about them.

Honest limits

  • Colour. Most PU concrete systems are not UV stable. Colours can fade or yellow in sunlight. It's cosmetic, but worth knowing.
  • Finish. It is a matt, textured working floor, not a glossy showroom finish.
  • Strong acids. Some aggressive chemicals need a chemical resistant flooring system.
  • Dry areas. In stores and packing rooms without wet cleaning, a cheaper PU floor coating or epoxy is usually enough.
  • Freezers. For chambers far below zero, the slab needs insulation and underfloor heating to prevent frost heave.

Installation

  • Survey: slab testing, drain and falls review, chemical and temperature assessment
  • Breakout: removal of tiles and weak concrete
  • Base preparation: shot blasting or scabbling, re-sloping and drain setting
  • Detailing: anchor grooves and coves
  • Laying: PU concrete trowelled to thickness with anti-slip texture
  • Handover: curing times and cleaning guidance in writing

Should we choose 6 mm or 9 mm?

Use 9 mm where there is steam cleaning, boiling liquid or heavy impact. 6 mm suits most wet processing areas with hot water cleaning.

Can PU concrete be laid over old tiles?

No. Tiles and weak screed must be removed so PU concrete bonds to sound concrete.

How quickly can a kitchen or processing area be used again?

PU concrete cures fast. Light traffic often returns within about a day, depending on temperature.

Is PU concrete suitable for food safety audits?

It is widely used in food plants because it is jointless, non-porous and easy to sanitise. Check your specific audit requirements.
