EPU flooring is an epoxy-polyurethane hybrid floor system. It combines the hardness, adhesion and chemical resistance of epoxy with the flexibility, impact resistance and colour stability of polyurethane. The result is a floor that holds up better than plain epoxy where epoxy tends to struggle: near sunny shutters, in buildings with big temperature swings, around vibrating machinery, and on routes where parts and pallets get dropped.

Why a hybrid?

Standard epoxy and PU each have a weakness:

PropertyStandard epoxyPUEPU hybrid

Colour stability in sunlightYellowsStable (aliphatic)Much better than epoxy
Chemical resistanceGoodGoodGood

EPU gives most of epoxy's toughness without its brittleness or yellowing. It is a good all-round choice for floors that face a bit of everything.

Where EPU works best

  • Warehouses and distribution centres, especially aisles and docks near sunny doors
  • Engineering and auto component plants, with vibration from presses and dropped parts
  • Chilled distribution areas, where dock doors cause frequent temperature changes
  • Buildings under metal roofs, where slabs heat and cool daily
  • Showrooms with glass fronts, where colour stability matters
  • Workshops, with oil, tools and heavy parts

Where another system is better

EPU and the WB version

We offer two related systems. EPU is the standard epoxy-polyurethane hybrid, suited to industrial and heavy commercial floors. Epoxy-PU hybrid WB is its water-based version, with low odour and low VOC content, designed for occupied buildings such as offices, hospitals and schools. EPU is the tougher choice for forklifts and impact. WB is the easier choice where people are working nearby.

Installation

  1. Survey: slab moisture, strength, cracks, joints and how the floor is used
  2. Preparation: grinding or shot blasting, oil removal, crack and joint repair
  3. Primer: moisture-tolerant where needed
  4. EPU body coat: typically in the 1 to 3 mm range, depending on traffic
  5. Topcoat: UV-stable, with anti-slip texture where required
  6. Marking and handover: walkways, zones and written curing times

Preparation matters more than the product

No coating fixes a moving crack or bonds to oil-soaked concrete. Around presses, cracks are assessed and repaired, broken joint edges are rebuilt with epoxy mortar, and loose machine base plates are regrouted before the EPU goes down.

FAQs

What does EPU stand for?

EPU refers to an epoxy-polyurethane hybrid floor system.

Is EPU better than epoxy?

Not always. EPU is better where there is sunlight, temperature change, vibration or impact. For indoor floors with moderate use and no sun, standard epoxy may be enough and costs less.

Can EPU go over an existing epoxy floor?

Often yes, if the old epoxy is well bonded. It is ground, repaired and then coated.

How long before forklifts can use an EPU floor?

Usually after a few days, depending on temperature. We confirm in writing.
