Terrace waterproofing and roof protection in Kanpur

Kanpur has a wide variety of roofs. In the older parts of the city, flat roofs on closely built houses have been patched for generations. Factories have concrete roofs over production halls and large metal sheds over godowns and workshops. Newer commercial buildings have roofs covered with water tanks and equipment. They all face the same two stresses: an extremely hot summer and a monsoon that exposes every crack.

Old city roofs

Flat roofs in Kanpur's older neighbourhoods often have several layers: original lime or brick terracing, later cement plaster, patches of bitumen and sometimes tiles. Water gets between the layers and travels, so a leak inside may be several metres from where water enters on the roof.

We start by finding the entry points. We look for cracks along parapets, broken outlets and hollow patches, and check where water pools after rain. Then we either repair the existing layers and apply a membrane over them, or, where the old terracing is waterlogged and broken, remove it and rebuild the slope before waterproofing.

In closely built areas, roofs also meet neighbouring walls. Those junctions need flashing and careful sealing, since water running down a neighbour's wall onto your roof is a common source of leaks.

Factory RCC roofs

Concrete roofs over production halls are large, with many outlets, skylights, exhaust fans and pipe penetrations. Leaks damage machines and stock below. For these roofs we:

1. map leaks from inside the plant against features on the roof
2. repair cracks and correct ponding areas
3. detail every penetration, skylight kerb and outlet
4. apply a liquid PU membrane with a heat-reflective topcoat

The reflective topcoat also helps reduce heat inside production halls in summer.

Metal sheds

Godowns and workshops with metal sheet roofs leak at sheet overlaps, fastener holes, ridges and gutters. Sheet roofs need a different system from concrete roofs. See our industrial shed waterproofing page for how we treat them.

Commercial buildings

Offices, hospitals and shopping complexes have water tanks, AC units and solar panels on their roofs. Each plinth and fixing is detailed as part of the membrane, so the roof stays sealed around equipment.

Heat and timing

Kanpur's roofs get extremely hot in May and June. Coatings applied on a scorching slab can blister or cure badly. We work from October to March where possible, and early in the morning in April. Monsoon surveys help locate leaks for work after the rains.

FAQs

Water drips in one room, but the roof above looks fine. Why?

Water often travels between old roof layers and appears some distance from where it enters. A survey traces the actual entry point.

Can a factory roof be waterproofed while production continues?

Yes. Roof work doesn't usually disturb production below, except where access through the plant is needed.

Is the same coating used for concrete roofs and metal sheds?

No. Metal sheds need systems designed for sheet overlaps, fasteners and thermal movement of metal.
