Plants in SIDCUL Sitarganj usually have two kinds of roof: large metal sheds over production and storage, and concrete (RCC) roofs over office blocks, canteens, utility buildings and some production halls. The Terai gets heavy monsoon rain, and flat concrete roofs that were detailed quickly during construction often start leaking within a few years. This page covers concrete roofs. For metal sheds, see our industrial shed waterproofing page.

Where plant concrete roofs leak

On a typical SIDCUL plant, concrete roof leaks come from:

  • Parapet junctions on office and canteen blocks
  • Rainwater outlets that are too small or poorly positioned for Terai downpours
  • Water tank bases on utility and office roofs
  • AC outdoor units, solar frames and cable trays fixed through the slab
  • Junctions between concrete roofs and adjoining sheds, where flashing is missing or failed

The last one is easy to miss. Where a shed roof meets a concrete wall or roof, water often gets in at the flashing, and the damp appears inside the concrete building.

Our system for concrete roofs

  1. Survey and leak mapping, inside and on the roof
  2. Crack repair and correction of ponding areas
  3. Fillets and membrane upturns at parapets and walls
  4. Sealing of outlets, penetrations and every fixing with reinforcement
  5. New or repaired flashings at shed-to-building junctions
  6. Liquid PU membrane with a UV-stable, heat-reflective topcoat

The reflective topcoat also helps keep offices and canteens cooler in the hot, humid summer.

Outlet capacity

Terai monsoon storms can drop a lot of rain in a short time. If a roof ponds after heavy rain, the outlets may simply be too few or too small. We check this and recommend extra outlets or overflow points where needed, since no membrane lasts well under standing water.

Planning a distant job

Sitarganj is a longer trip from our Roorkee base, so we plan roof work to cover everything in one visit:

  • share photos of the roofs and inside leak points, plus rough roof sizes
  • we suggest a scope, including any shed junctions and flashing work
  • one site visit confirms condition and quantities
  • work is done in the dry season in a single mobilisation

If floors, tanks or walls in the same plant also need work, combining the jobs reduces cost and disruption.

Timing

The dry season, from about October to May, is the only reliable window for roof waterproofing in the Terai. We recommend booking early, since many plants want roof work done before the monsoon.

FAQs

Our office roof leaks where it meets the shed. Is that a roof problem or a shed problem?

Usually it's the junction flashing. We repair or replace the flashing and tie it into the concrete roof waterproofing.

Can offices below stay in use during roof work?

Yes. Roof waterproofing is done from above and doesn't usually disturb work inside.

How long does a typical office block roof take?

Depending on size and repairs, usually several days including curing between coats.
